As always, $20 buys you dinner and a drink and some of the finest literary company this city has to offer. No RSVP is required, but it’s appreciated so we have a rough idea of whether we need to reserve the snug or to lay in crowd control! Click here to RSVP on Facebook.
Join us as we celebrate the release of Heather Haley’s latest book of poetry, Three Blocks West of Wonderland. Heather is both the digital AND actual troubadour of the West Coast, from Bowen Island to Venice Beach, and for the first time she’ll be bringing her multimedia performance experience to the Shebeen Club. There will be poetry. There will be prose. There will be beauty. There may be song. And there WILL be videopoems, a dynamic new genre that seems to have sprung fully formed from the forehead of the Siren of Howe Sound herself.
We’re very proud to help celebrate a pivotal local literatus’s latest launch! And that’s my allotment of “L’s” for the week right there.
Poet, author, musician and media artist Heather Haley pushes boundaries by creatively integrating disciplines, genres and media. Published in numerous journals and anthologies including Geist and The Verse Map of Vancouver, her poetry collections Sideways (Anvil Press) and Three Blocks West of Wonderland (Ekstasis Editions) have been described as “supple and unusual,” “brawny and uncompromising.”
Heather Haley is returning to LA to perform poems from her new book "Three Blocks West Of Wonderland," dedicated to the memory of Peter Haskell.
RPW's "Canadian national treasure," will be at Pasadena Public Library on Sept 26th at 3:00.
Heather is the author of the forthcoming Three Blocks West of Wonderland and Sideways, described as "brawny and uncompromising" and “supple and unusual.”
Check out her AURAL Heather spoken word song CD 'Princess Nut' and download the songs right here at RPW.

Sylvia Patricia http://www.sylviapatricia.com.br/en/
All the way from Brazil, Sylvia Patricia is touring in support of her fifth CD¨ NO RADIO DA MINHA CABEÇA.¨
One of most important composer and singer from Bahia-Brazil, with a really unique personal style, she mixes Bossa Nova and Brazilian Rhythms with Blues, Jazz, Rock and R&B, as well as doses of Latin music.
With her sensual, deep voice, and her versatility as a singer, ranging from whisper to wild chords, Sylvia Patricia was the first Bahian singer to receive the Sharp Prize.
Sylvia Patricia feels comfortable within any musical style being both an academic musician and a popular singer. She studied composing and conducting, classical guitar, piano and even classical Indian music.
Born in Salvador, with indigenous blood she uses the music to talk of love and life’s ups and downs in the metropolis, of sprawling cities that don’t ever stop growing but all from an upbeat female viewpoint.
"Prolific and incredibly talented." - The Leader-Post
“Billy is a DIY poster girl.” - Vue Weekly
'Lost – a phenomenon, not a trend." - The Cambridge Voice
"It's not enough to say that Billy The Kid is a talented artist. It isn't enough to say she's successful. It isn't even enough to say that Billy and her band of Lost Boys have a stage–presence worth seeing over and over again. Billy the Kid exemplifies the essence of the independent spirit, charisma and inspiration for artists on the rise or for those hoping for the chance to make it that far. " - Echo Weekly

RPW is joining with Vancouver City Limits to present a Violet Femmes Showcase featuring Claire Hayek from Montreal along with Vancouver artists Chistie Rose and Manuela.
Vancouver City Limits present weekly music events featuring bright new stars on the Vancouver scene. Their team film and edit performance video and upload it onto their youtube channel, http://www.youtube.com/vancouvercitylimits
Claire Hayek will travel from Montreal especially for this show. Her new CD Intentions has just been released and her song ‘If Only I’ is on Violet Femmes Vol 2, released in March 09.
Before her parents fled Beirut with their children, Claire Hayek escaped the unbearable realities of the civil war in Lebanon with music. As a young child, she sang and played the flute for her school choir. At that point she already knew that music would be her lifeblood. Info music and videos at:
Christie Rose has a soulful voice that wraps itself around the listener. Her songs are big, deep wells you fall into and soak up the sounds. Recent appearances at Lugz and Lime are winning her new fans.
“Manuela stands out from the crowd. Her quiet, unassuming offstage presence vanishes when she's in front of a mic, replaced by a confident, tuneful chanteuse. Her songs are perfectly rendered pop/jazz/folk. Manuela is right in there with the best of the best.” John Pippus, Trees Coffee House
This is a great night in the making, charismatic women performing in a variety of genres.

Yesterday on Bowen Island, at the home of Heather Haley, there was a very special benefit gathering
in recognition of the importance of Al Purdy to Canadian poetry. Poets, and lovers of Canadian poetry gravitated to Heather's Purdy Party to raise funds to preserve Purdy's A Frame home which is considered an important cultural and heritage property.
Esteemed poets read for us, Jamie Reid and George Bowering were among them. Also AURAL Heather performed a new piece written in honour of Al Purdy.
It was a great chilly yet sunny afternoon and an occasion I will always remember.

Marian Call http://www.myspace.com/mariancall
"...If I were a betting man, I would put my money on Marian Call. Vanilla is a Certified Desert Island Disc, and any other awards or monikers you can think to throw its way. It's the best thing I've heard thus far in 2008, and is one of the three best debut albums I've ever heard. Remember the day and time when you first heard about Marian Call, and get on the bandwagon soon. This star is going to burn bright." - Wildy Haskell, music reviewer & pop culture blogger
AURAL Heather is Heather Haley and Roderick Shoolbraid. http://www.heatherhaley.com
An interesting twist on poetry, AURAL Heather has taken an artform to higher levels of cool. Pulling no punches, AURAL Heather drops the truth on a diverse array of controversial topics relevant to society. Doing it with an undeniable allure, lead poet Haley's voice is both sensual and intriguing delivering the real to you without apology.
For most, this form of artistic release may be quite new. The artists have been plying their craft in the underground scene for years, but do yourself a favor and open your ears and mind to a complex and intriguing ageless artform.
AURAL Heather has fashioned a unique style of melding some very cool musical production with haunting realities communicated in memorable, sensual and haunting vocal stylings. The core musical aspects of this act are the essence of cool, ...

Last night Aural Heather's Heather Haley was on The Storytelling Show on CFRO 102.7 fm COOP radio. She spoke of her inspirations and performance experiences and we heard tracks from the new cd Princess Nut as well as one from Surfing Seasons. It was a great night Heather will be performing at the Violet Femmes Showcase on April 1st at the MEDIA Club in Vancouver
Join us at the Media Club on Cambie St in Vancouver BC on Tuesday March 10th for the CD Release of Violet Femmes Vol 2.
Pauline Kyllonen from Kelowna will be in town for the show. Her track, Unlucky, is the first single off this compilation CD featuring women from around the world.
Here is a little info on Pauline as found in her recent review by Nancy Dunham in the Indie Music Magazine
Pauline Kyllonen may hail from Canada, but her sound is right out of Nashville, or Texas, or maybe Arizona. Suffice to say she's got the Folk/Americana/Country sound down pat and has the talent to make the most of it.
What sets Kyllonen apart from others is the simplicity with which she showcases the music. Her strong yet wistful voice is the main instrument on these tracks, never overwhelmed by complex instrumentation or too slick production. Think of a cleaner, less fussy musical version of Lucinda Williams and you'll be on the right track.
Vancouver's Joanna Chapman Smith will also be performing songs from her newly released CD.
Joanna Chapman-Smith is a sassy singer-songwriter who writes about the contraries of Right/Wrong and Mind/Body with humour and sophistication. Inspired by William Blake's, "The Marriage of Heaven & Hell", Joanna's songs look at oppositions that exist within the human spirit. Appropriately, "Contraries" is the title of Chapman-Smith's second solo album (2009).
There are new songs posted on myspace.com/violetfemmes. Take a listen to Addie Loy, Lorraine Reid, Lisa J Carman, Jean Greer McCarthy and Laura RoppeAlso the official website has been updated and loo...
